Asylum and the blame game

MIZORAM chief minister Zoramthanga and his Tripura counterpart Manik Sarkar are engaged in a new blame game. Each is accusing the other of providing asylum to armed underground groups from their respective states. While Zoramthanga has alleged Tripura was providing shelter to Bru militants, Sarkar has complained that the National Liberation Front of Tripura NLFT have seven camps inside Mizoram with the full knowledge of the state government. For Zoramthanga, it is a major issue, because his government is heading for assembly elections later this year.

Cancer unit for Shillong

WITH the incidence of cancer registering an upward trend in the hill state, the Meghalaya government has decided to set up a cancer diagnostic unit in Shillong later this year. Meghalaya has the second highest incidence of oral cancer in the northeast.

Betel nut, which is very popular in the state, is said to be a major cause of oral cancer.

Gas cracker project out of steam

A GAS cracker project in Assam, work on which should have begun way back in 1991, is yet to get started. Allotted to Reliance Industries Ltd, the future of the project is in limbo since the promoters are yet to receive an assurance on supply of natural gas at a subsidised price as promised by the government.

The Assam government has already allotted a large plot for the project.

New look for Manipur schools

WITH government schools faring poorly in the high school board exams, the Manipur government last week announced a series of measures to spruce up the state8217;s school education system.

An expert committee constituted meanwhile has pointed out that most government schools did not have full-time headmasters and poor infrastructure facilities were a cause for increasing dropout rates.

Muse of the hills

POETRY, it has been said, is the best form of expression. Last week Shillong inaugurated the first-ever anthology of contemporary poetry from all over the northeast.

The 270-page volume, a collection of works of 45 contemporary poets, focuses on the diverse backdrops of this region.
