Sydney: Security on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympics is so strict that scribes and those working at the Homebush Bay are a harried lot.

Right from the time the bus carrying officials and scribes approaches the Bay, securitymen can be seen at their job. Unless the bus drivers flash their passes, they cannot enter. Once inside, the security cops put all equipment through the X-ray, even ensuring purses and coins are screened.

What is surprising is the methods seem medieval. The media is also facing the brunt of the attack with even drinking water not being provided free.

Many Indian scribes who came her without own laptops and typewriters are facing severe problems. Typewriters are extinct like the dinosaur and laptops not easy to obtain here on rent even though cameramen have adequate back-up.What is most appaling is the unprofessional approach adopted by the organisers, subjecting the third world media to virtual humiliation.
