Security still an issue on PU campus

Authorities at the Panjab University PU, taking serious note of recent incidents of violence in the campus, held a meeting today to discuss the ways and means to buffer up security in the university.

In the meeting, it was decided that the campus would have at least five drop gates to prevent the entry of outsiders.

Also, a suggestion to have more CCTV cameras in different parts of the campus was made. Another move that the authorities decided upon was to hire additional security personnel.

Earlier, the university had hired private security guards, which is now being phased out after they failed to maintain a peaceful environment in the campus. Around 50 security personnel have already been hired and the PU seem to be keen on hiring more.

Talking to Newsline, a senior university official said, 8220;Security has been one area where we seem to be lacking but now with new measures being adopted, we expect to see a change. Students without identity cards would not be allowed in the campus.8221; The entry of outsiders has also been banned in the Students8217; Centre. The steps are likely to be implemented soon, he added.
