Schools to have pure drinking water under Central project

The Centre sponsored 8216;Jalmani8217; project, which aims to provide potable water facility in government schools in rural areas, will be inaugurated in Gujarat on November 14.

State8217;s Water Supply Minister Nitin Patel will inaugurate the project at Madal village in Tharaj taluka of Banaskantha. The same day, state8217;s Education Minister Ramanlal Vora and Forest and Environment Minister Kirit Rana will dedicate a system at Badoli village in Idar taluka of Sabarkantha, and Bhalgamda village in Limbdi in Surendranagar district respectively.

In the first year of the project, one-lakh water purification system units will be installed across schools in the country, with help from the respective state governments. In Gujarat, the Water and Sanitation Management Association will implement the project in three schools, in association with the gram panchayat, village education committee and primary teachers association.

According to a Gujarat State Information Bureau release, each system with a capacity of purifying1,000 litres per day will cost Rs 40,000, including operation and maintenance cost for the first five years. Water thus purified will cost 3 paise per litre. The respective schools will own the systems.
