Female foeticide has come under judicial scanner with the Supreme Court today seeking responses of the Centre and state governments on a PIL seeking to prohibit pre-natal sex determination tests.

Jain observed while issuing notices to the Centre, the state governments and the Union Territories asking them to reply to the PIL.

The PIL by NGO Voluntary Health Association of Punjab has sought an apex court direction to the authorities concerned to implement strictly the provisions of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques prohibition on sex selection Act.

The court also issued notices to the ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Law and Justice and Women and Child Development making it an expansive matter of national importance.

The PIL has contended that the 1994 Act was amended in 2003, but urgent guidelines are needed for the 8220;proper and full implementation of the Act8221;.
