MAHABALESHWAR, April 19: Not more than 20 per cent of the approved village water supply schemes in Satara district have actually seen the light of the day so far. Some 66 drinking water schemes of the 387 approved schemes worth Rs 109 crore in the district are under construction, Minister of State for water supply Arjun Khotkar was informed by his department8217;s officials at a recent meeting here.

The district administration working towards meeting the State Government8217;s ambitious plan to make the State tanker-free by the turn of the century has identified 114 villages in Satara as scarcity-hit, the minister was informed.

Taking the stock of the situation, the minister directed the officials concerned to be quality cautious. Khotkar was of the opinion that the drinking water supply scheme for the hill-station of Mahabaleshwar be taken over by the local municipal council. The Council should forward a resolution to this effect to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, he recommended.

The council should take care of the growing water needs of the hill-station during the summer, he stressed. The minister was also emphatic on removing the quot;hurdlesquot; in the water supply scheme to the Satara city and the distribution network there. Outdated water pumps and other machinery should be replaced to ensure the effectiveness of the scheme, especially during the summer months, he told the officials.

The proposals for water supply schemes for Vardhangad and Lalgoon villages should also be cleared besides enlarging the scheme for Wathar station, the minister told the officials.
