India8217;s No.2 player and second seed Krishnan Sasikiran defeated, one of the strong Grandmasters of the world, Evgeny Sveshnikov with the black pieces in the seventh round of the Dubai Open Chess Tournament in Dubai on Sunday.

Sveshnikov went for a razor sharp attack against Sasi8217;s Caro-kann defence. However, the Indian defended well to force victory after 41 moves when the Russian was losing a piece by force.

Sasikiran, who has three wins and four draws, has logged five points, one point less than tournament leader Alexander Goloshchapov. The Ukrainian, who made a brilliant start with five out of five, drew with Russian Sergei Volkov in the seventh round. Volkov and Jaan Ehlvest Estonia are following the leaders half a point behind.
