How would you react when you hear Krishnan Sasikiran 8212; the third-ranked Indian on the Fide list, say: 8220;There are some days you simply don8217;t feel the desire to play chess.8221; You just barely recover from the initial shock when the Chennai-based GM drops another bombshell.

Adds the player with an Elo rating of 2675: 8220;I think I lack maturity. I don8217;t have the correct tournament approach. I need to work on my choice of openings. All this explains why despite reaching the 2650 mark in July 2002, I haven8217;t been able to make much headway thereafter. I want to reach the 2700 mark, but I8217;m unable to improve on my rating. I haven8217;t been able to make good of most of the opportunities at higher level tournaments all these years.8221;

Sasikiran, who is in the city to participate in the inter-Petroleum meet, however, feels he8217;s improved his game over the last few months. 8220;I8217;ve started playing more open games these days. Also, after my sessions with GM Elizbar Ubilava last October, I think I8217;ve made progress as far as my openings are concerned,8221; he says.

The next assignment for Sasikiran is the Spanish League, beginning September 5.
