A set of ‘diktats’ coming from headmaster Gautam Chatterjee has sparked off another controversy at The Lawrence School, Sanawar.
The instructions issued by Chatterjee do not just restrict parents from interacting with the school staff, but also bar members of the Board of Governors (BoG) from visiting the campus without his permission. Taken aback by the circulars, a BoG member has shot off a letter to the headmaster, asking him to put up these issues at the BoG meeting, sources say.
The headmaster, who claims that the ‘‘decisions’’ have been shaped by his own experience at the school, has instructed that ‘‘no present BoG member, or anyone who has been a BoG member in the past six years is to visit the campus without his express invitation or permission.’’ He further orders that all questions would be directed to the ‘‘Headmaster’s Executive Assistant, Mrs Adhikari’’.
The first letter, sent to over 600 parents and teachers by the Headmaster, says the idea is to remove interference in internal school matters by partisan parents, old students and BoG members. ‘‘I am not forbidding what is not in my power to enforce,’’ the letter reads.
‘‘In the meantime,’’ he adds, ‘‘I reserve the right to take the most extreme disciplinary measures against anyone who is discovered to have flouted these rules.’’
The headmaster has also warned parents against hobnobbing with the staff for any reason except in their formal capacity as staff members.
Chatterjee is, however, taking the plea that some influential parents and BoG members were attempting to seek special treatment for their wards. ‘‘I want to ensure that all students are treated equally. Letters should not be inferred in a wrong manner.’’
