The Shiromani Akali Dal SAD, which is part of the BJP-led NDA, is still undecided on whether to support the Congress-led UPA on the issue of the civilian nuclear deal stand-off.
As hectic political maneuvering goes on to decide the fate of the UPA Government, SAD president and MP Sukhbir Badal told The Indian Express: 8220;Our party is yet to decide on this issue. For us, the issue on which the support is being withdrawn is important to take into consideration.8221;
Political experts say India8217;s first Sikh Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may not be lucky enough to win the sympathies of the SAD in Punjab. However, SAD has not left the decision to its coalition partner in the state, the BJP, to take a united stand on the issue.
Sukhbir Badal said: 8220;If it8217;s on the civilian nuclear deal, our party is yet to take a final call. It8217;s not about a Sikh Prime Minister. We have yet to discuss the issue in our Political Affairs Committee PAC meeting. Let there be a stand-off, which warrants a situation of extending or withdrawing support. We8217;ll then take a call.8221;
A senior SAD leader said: 8220;So far, the UPA allies are undecided. SAD8217;s loyalty as part of the NDA continues.8221;
Navjot Singh Sidhu told The Indian Express that the stand of the BJP leadership is the only thing relevant to the state unit.
