An Under-trial prisoner at the Sabarmati Central Jail allegedly attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills in the high security jail premises on Friday evening. The inmate, Naresh Solanki 24, was immediately rushed to the civil hospital where his condition is said to be out of danger.
The Sabarmati police said, around 5 pm, Solanki swallowed the pills prescribed to one of his fellow inmates. About an hour later, he fell semi-conscious and other inmates intimated the jail authorities.
8220;We are yet to record Solanki8217;s statement, as we are awaiting permission from the doctor. It will be only after talking to him that we can ascertain the cause behind the incident. As of now, we are relying on what some of the inmates told us that Solanki accidentally swallowed the pills,8221; said Sub-Inspector G B Vaghela.
This is the second such incident reported from the jail in a week. On October 31, a murder convict, Mayabhai Kapadbhai, had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a jail lavatory. Investigation suggested that the suicide was a fallout of a court refusing to grant him furlough to celebrate Diwali with his family.
