Agreeing to share information to check trans-border crimes, police chiefs from SAARC nations on Tuesday suggested a database that could help security agencies combat terrorism, narcotics smuggling and cyber crime. The idea was discussed on the first day of the three-day SAARC Home Ministers’ Conference that started here on Tuesday.
Delegates from eight SAARC nations, including the newest member Afghanistan, also discussed the need for effective institutional mechanisms for greater coordination. The Indian delegation was headed by P C Haldar, Director, Intelligence Bureau, and included senior Home Ministry and CBI officials.
The second day will see Home Secretaries of the SAARC nations discuss legislation related to security and steps to combat trans-border crimes. The Home Ministers of the SAARC nations will meet on the third day.
