So you thought all a star cricketer had to do was turn up on the day and turn on the style? Actually, there8217;s a bit of hard work too. For the past few days, they8217;ve been in the hands of trainer Greg King and four zonal trainers Chinmoy Roy, East; Amog Pandit, West; R Ramji, South; Ramakant Rao, KSCA. This is what they8217;ve been doing, a mix of four or five drills every day

WEIGHT-TRAINING
The batsmen were made to go through long, uninterrupted sessions; the bowlers had lighter sessions
Purpose: Work on strength

SHUTTLE-RUNNING
Special drills in which the players were made to run 20-metre sprints back and forth between specified markers 8212; the full exercise with as little delay as possible, and for 8-12 times
Purpose: Develop speed and agility

VERTICAL JUMP
This drill, specially emphasised by Chappell himself, saw the players evaluated on jumps 8216;8216;straight upwards8217;8217;. Marks were awarded for 8216;8216;height attained8217;8217;
Purpose: Agility

SLEDGE-RUN
Sledges loaded with weights are tied to the waists of the players. As the players run forward, they drag the heavy sledges. Number of weight discs is gradually increased as the drill progresses
Purpose: Developing strength and running-technique

LADDER-RUN
Taking off from the conventional drill, this exercise sees players sprint over long rows of ladders laid out. It8217;s split into two parts: first, the players run fast while landing the foot in each gap between the rungs. Then they run faster, skipping every alternate gap
Purpose: Work on speed and agility

CONE DRILL
Perhaps the most widely known exercise, applied to many other agility-oriented games like football and rugby. But here the cones, instead of being placed at identical intervals, are spread erratically. The players have to keep running and 8216;8216;snake8217;8217; around them, maintaining the same speed
Purpose: Best for fielders to develop speed, agility, and anticipation

BEEP TEST
An interesting training session involving the element of music. A certain rhythmic musical piece is played at length; the players have to execute push-ups and sit-ups keeping the beat. The drill gets its name from the 8220;beeps8221; of the music played
Purpose: Develop strength and a breath control

SPRINT-REPEAT
The killer. The players are made to run flat out for 30 seconds. After a 35-second break, another 30-second run, followed by another break, and so on. This goes on for about 10 minutes or more
Purpose: Work on speed and running technique
