VADODARA, June 22: Intensifying vigilance, after octroi collection recorded a low in 1997-98, the Octroi Department of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation VMC collected Rs 5.50 lakh during the last fortnight.

DyMC I B Peerzada told Express Newsline that two motorcars, on Sunday, containing 50 boxes of dryfruits were caught after the drivers tried to evade octroi by trying to escape from three octroi posts. An amount of Rs 88,000 was recovered from owners of a firm, whose motorcars were caught at the Gotri Check Post.

Joined vigilance, carried out by a team comprising Assistant Municipal Commissioner R P Yagnik, office superintendents Mayank Trivedi and John Gonsalvis and Peerzada, himself, has led the department to success.

He said during the last fortnight, the department had collected Rs 5.50 lakh in form of revenue, including fine from octroi evaders, mainly suppliers of electrical goods, cigarettes, tyre and tubes, computers, readymade garments and cosmetics.

The department in the last two months collected Rs 12 lakh from defaulters.In 1997-98, the department had recorded only a marginal growth of Rs 3 crore as against the collection of about Rs 80 crore.

Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria said more jeeps would be provided to the department to keep a watch on vehicles, which tried to evade octroi.
