Closed doors

With pubs shutting early, partying in this town has almost come to a standstill. Most bars are closed by midnight and orders for the last drink are taken by 10.30 pm. For those used to leaving the house at midnight, the new rule is proving to be tortuous.

What8217;s worse is that the one bar that could be counted on to stay open late has been shut all of last week. Fashion Bar had to down its shutters due a minor fire 8212; the result of a short circuit, on Friday. While the Bistro was unaffected, the bar needed some repairs. Now they must be thanking their lucky stars. Business has been so dull that it probably makes better sense to stay shut 8212; most night owls aren8217;t even bothering to make the rounds of the bars.

Instead, the party scene has shifted to home entertainment or swanky lunch parties. The launch party of Orchid8217;s new range of make-up was one such afternoon fiesta. Lakme had booked the Taj Roof top for the event which kicked off with three women being given a complete makeoverby the city8217;s top brushes 8212; Cory Walia, Marvie Beck and Michelle Tung. Incidentally, we think Michelle should model more. She looked ravishing in black trousers and a black top.

Among the lucky ladies being made over were Atul Kasbekar8217;s wife Vandana, and Gautam Singhania8217;s fiancee Nawaz Modi. After the make-up was done they were asked to model a Wendell Rodericks creation that went with their new look. After their little sashay they were told that the simple and elegant outfits were theirs to keep. It seemed that every glamourous lady in the city had turned up for the Lakme make-over. There was Sabira Merchant, looking pretty in pink, Shernaaz Dinshaw who compered the event, Nina Manuel, Lisa Ray, Svetlana Casper, Sangeeta Chopra, Gauri Khan, Dianne Pandey and sister Alison Kanuga.

That night, a lot of the same faces were spotted at Three Flights Up, at the Levi8217;s bash. The event was held to celebrate the launch of their new ad campaign which aims to raise AIDS awareness. Calledquot;Condom manquot;, it will be on air in time for World AIDS Day on December 1. A lot of the model crowd turned up, as well as some singers. This time, the compere was the svelte beauty Nafisa Joseph. And listening to her were Mehnaaz, Gary Lawyer, Asif Baig and Kamlesh Shah. The music, by the way, was simply great. They blended some old numbers and some new songs and even one or two desi pop numbers.

The Daler Mehndi numbers really seemed to go down well with the models, especially Lisa Ray who seemed to know every word of his songs. But the food was inedible. One or two of the models were even seen spitting out the chicken pieces which apparently tasted just like rubber! But nonetheless a good time was had by all.

Last week, Diana Hayden spent a few days in Mumbai. While she has been really busy with her duties as Miss World, Diana made a desperate stopover in the city to organise a dress. Her tenure is coming to an end and she needs something really dazzling to wear when she hands overher crown to the new Miss World. Her gown is being designed by Hemant Trevedi 8212; who incidentally, designed her swimsuit for the contest last year. Let8217;s see what he comes up with this time. We are also keeping Diana under close scrutiny. Will she go the Ash and Sush way and turn to Bollywood? Or will she return to her old job at BMG Crescendo?

And finally8230;

Last week, we reported that Noyonika Chatterjee was all set to marry her sweetheart Gurpreet, in December. But we are sorry to say that a glitch seems to have occurred. The long-time lovers have decided to postpone their wedding for a year. Yet again. First they got engaged, then they denied it. Then they fixed a wedding date and now they have postponed it. Whatever the reason, we hope all is well. Noyonika really deserves the best.
