
VADODARA, May 25: One of the five criminals, caught by passengers of the Bombay-bound 19 Dn Dehradun Express during a loot and handed over to the police on May 22, succumbed to injuries in the Navsari Civil Hospital on Monday while another slipped out of the hospital.
Eight youths, between 23 and 27, boarded the general bogey of the train at Vapi railway station and started looting the passengers after the train had just pulled out of the Valsad railway station.
And as they were armed with knives and other sharp-edged weapons, passengers did not put up resistance and handed over whatever they asked for.However, one of the passengers, Bhikaram Ramdas mustered up courage and resisted one of the robbers attempt, when he tried to snatch his chain. Soon the passengers joined him and gave a good thrashing to robbers before handing them over to the police. Five were caught while three managed to escape.
Acting Superintendent of the Railway Police K R Jadav told Express Newsline that the train stopped at the Billimora railway station when one of the passengers pulled the emergency chain and informed the policemen in the adjoining compartment.
Jadav said all five were immediately admitted to the Navsari civil hospital, where one Sudhakar Narayan, who had sustained head injuries, died.Jadav said that the remaining three were still under treatment in the hospital and would be taken in police custody after being discharged.
