
AMRITSAR, Jan 3: The transport department will observe Road Safety Week from January 4. Disclosing this Deputy Commissioner Narinderjit Singh said that a state level seminar would be organised on January 7 to be presided over by Rajbir Singh, State Transport Minister. District transport officer Gurvaryam Singh disclosed that eye camps for the drivers of heavy vehicles would be set up at roadways workshops, besides launching special inspection drive against overloaded and overspeeding trucks. DTO added that tractor trolleys which were posing major accident problems during night would be painted with fluorescent paints. Pollution level of all the vehicles would be checked free of cost during the week, he added.
Special small savings scheme exceeds target
Roopnagar: One Maruti car and six motor cycles were among several attractive gifts presented to the winners of Special Small Saving Scheme during the preceding year. Disclosing this to mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu said the district authorities had succeeded in raising Rs 107.80 crore till 1998 end, far above the target of Rs 106 crore.
65-yr-old man killed
Batala: One person was allegedly killed with an iron rod at Kot Santokh Rai village under Kalanaur police station in Batala police district on Friday night. According to the police, some unidentified persons entered the house of Joginder Pal Singh Bedi (65) and killed him while he was asleep. Police suspect that the same gang was behind the murder of 90-year-old Leela Wanti at her house in the same village last week. SSP Lok Nath Angra claimed that the alleged culprits had been identified but they were still absconding.
Suspension of MC staff revoked
Batala: The employees of the local Municipal Council have called off their one month old chain hunger strike following the decision of Local Bodies Department to revoked the suspension of five employees of the council. Regional Deputy Director, Local Bodies, Amritsar, P.S. Shergill had suspended Sub Inspector Davinder Pal, clerks Gurbachan Lal, Bak Singh and Subhash Chabnder and peon Sat Pal during his visit to Municipal Council on November 6. The suspended employees were reinstated pending departmental inquiry.
Award for Hindi satirist
Moga: A noted Hindi writer and satirist from Madhya Pradesh, Jagat Singh Visht has been selected for "Leela Rani Memorial Award" for 1998 for his book "Ath Daftar Katha", a satire on office routine. The award was declared by Leela Rani Samriti Purskar Samiti award selection committee organiser and renowned Punjabi writer and satirist K.L. Garg here today. The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 5,000, a shall and a momento, will be conferred on Visht at his native place Shahdol in M.P. in the third week of February.
Interschool NSS camp held
Patiala: An interschool NSS camp of the local schools, including Senior Secondary Girls Government School, New Power House Colony, and Shakuntala Girls Senior Secondary School was organised at the New Power House Colony government school on the directions of the Directorate of Youth Services, Punjab. The 10-day camp was inaugurated by Tarjeet Kaur Walia, principal of the host school. Kharag Singh Cheema, District Education Officer presided over the concluding function.
