Rio Ferdinand has reportedly agreed to a new five-year contract with Manchester United that could tie him to the Premier League club for the rest of his career. The 29-year-old England defender, who has captained his club and country on occasion this season, has a year left on his present agreement.
Ferdinand delayed signing his current contract in 2005 in an apparent attempt to force United into raising its salary offer, which led to fans jeering him during preseason games. But British papers The Guardian and the Daily Mirror reported Tuesday that Ferdinand had come to an agreement much more quickly this time and that his new contract will be worth as much as 120,000 pounds.
