
CHANDIGARH, Aug 3: Rickshaw-pullers and roadside workers who have been removed by the enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation held separate rallies in Sector 17, here today. The rallies, though peaceful, caused disruptions in the traffic.
The roadside workers including barbers, cobblers, mechanics and washermen began gathering outside the office of the Municipal Corporation in the morning and as soon as the rain subsided, they marched towards the Chandigarh Housing Board roundabout. They raised slogans against the UT administration, Municipal Corporation, Mayor Gian Chand Gupta and also against MP Satya Pal Jain.
On the other hand, the rickshaw-pullers blocked traffic near the MC office for a brief period. Equipped with lathis, they stormed the MC office but were stopped at the gate by the policemen. They were protesting the quot;repressivequot; measures of the MC against them.
President of the Footpath Workers Rozgar Bachao Samiti Ramesh Kumar demanded that their tools be returned immediately or they would intensify their agitation. The statement by the Samiti added that they submitted their memorandum of demands to municipal commissioner S.K. Gathwal.
