MELBOURNE, JANUARY 20: Tennis was dragged into high farce when a confused Jelena Dokic claimed a Melbourne newspaper made up a front page story quoting her saying draws were being deliberately rigged to stall her career.

Dokic’s alleged comments to the Herald-Sun drew an angry response from leading women’s players who called her “dumb” and the claims “ludicrous” as the story overshadowed the tennis at the Australian Open.

The 16-year-old Australian appeared before a packed press conference on Thursday in which she made a jumbled statement and refused to take any more questions on the subject.
