CHANDIGARH, May 14: The Punjab Government is formulating a package of relief measures for disabled persons in the state.
The proposed steps include unemployment doles for the jobless, special cells for the educated and handicapped job-seekers in all employment exchanges to fill vacancies reserved for them, free education up to 18 years of age, provision of special training to their teachers and complete free travel for the visually handicapped in state transport buses but half concession for other categories of handicapped.
These relief measures were decided upon during a meeting of the state executive committee of the Social Security and Women and Child Development Department presided over by Minister of Social Welfare Jagir Kaur. An official release stated today that the meeting also decided to set up a state-level Institute for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled Persons this year.
The participants felt that a lack of proper count of the disabled persons was a major hurdle in their welfare. The Directorate has moved the Census Dept and the Law Ministry to ensure proper enumeration of the blind and disabled.
