
It8217;s all in the family as far as politics and politicians are concerned. Family members of contesting candidates are not only canvassing throughout the respective constituencies, but are also doubling up as covering candidates. These relatives include fathers, brothers, sons, mothers, wives and even sons-in-law.
Interestingly, the practice of family members filling in as covering candidates has been a part of politics for a long time.
Covering candidates are people whose nomination papers are filed with the main candidate.
If, on technical grounds of anomaly in filing nomination papers, the main candidate8217;s papers are rejected, the covering candidate becomes the official party candidate. 8220;For a long time now, we8217;ve seen candidates relying more and more on family members as covering candidates. This gives ample time to rectify any anomaly in the nomination papers of the main candidate, if any,8221; says Surinder Grewal, who is in charge of media for the Shiromani Akali Dal Badal SAD B.
From Kila Raipur constituency, Congress candidate Jasbir Singh Khangura filed nomination papers with his father Jagpal SIngh Khangura as covering candidate. From the same constituency, SAD B candidate Jagdish Garcha8217;s brother Mann Singh Garcha was the covering candidate.
PPCC8217;s Shamsher Singh Dullo8217;s covering candidate was none other than his better half and sitting MLA Harbans Kaur Dullo from Khanna. At Koom Kalan it is brothers-only show. SAD B candidate Inder Iqbal Singh8217;s covering candidate was his brother Jasjit Singh, while that of Congress candidate Ishar Singh was his brother Gurinder Singh.
From Ludhiana west Congress candidate Harnam Dass Johar8217;s covering candidate was his son Rajiv Johar. and from Jagraon SAD B candidate Bhag Singh Malha8217;s son Kanwaljit Singh Malha and Congress candidate Gurdeep Singh Bhaini8217;s son Major Singh was his covering candidate.
From Khanna constituency, SAD B Bikramjit Singh8217;s mother Balbir Kaur was her covering candidate.
