
CALCUTTA, Dec 14: Four persons were today remanded to police custody in connection with the assault of the national basketball player Rekha Chowdhury.
They were remanded uptil December 23 by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Pal. The accused were arrested last night. Rekha was allegedly assaulted by a group of miscreants riding a Maruti van, when she was at her daily morning practice at the maidan area on city8217;s Red Road yesterday.
According to the complaints lodged with the police, the miscreants teased Rekha and her friends, hurled abuses at them and physically assaulted her. She was admitted at the B R Singh Hospital with serious injuries.
The Bengal Olympic Association BOA today strongly condemned the assault on Rekha and demanded stern action against the culprits. BOA President, Ashok Ghosh, who met the Police Commissioner during the day, urged him to take all possible steps to arrest all the culprits.
He also urged the Police Commisioner to arrange for mobile security units inthe Calcutta maidan area where many sportpersons go for practice or jogging.
Ghosh also said that the Hastings Police Station should be instructed to take immediate action when complaints are lodged by sportpersons, which was not done in this case.
8220;Such an incident has come as a big shock for the sports fraternity in the city. We only hope that it is the first and last such case,8221; he said.
Ghosh, who went to see Rekha at the hospital, said that she was now recovering under the treatment of Dr A Sen.
