PATIALA: Punjab Public Works Minister Harmel Singh on Sunday assured to secure maximum grant for repair of the govenment Mohindra College building, one of the oldest colleges of North India. Speaking at the prize distribution function of the college, Harmel Singh said that a granthi would soon be a appointed for the college gurdwara and assured that adequate fund would be made available for the college library. The Minister gave away prizes to about 300 students.
ARRESTED
AMRITSAR: Majitha Police today arrested two accused responsible for looting money and snatching scooter from Jugraj Singh of village Saahura after injuring him. SSP Gurdev Singh Sahota, Majitha, identified the accused as Balwinder Singh and Gurdeep Singh resident of Sahura and Agniwal Fazilka villages respectively. He said that police have recovered one 303 pistol and .32 bore revolver beside one scooter and a Ford tractor. He said the Ford tractor was snatched from Rajinder Singh nar Mukatsar after killing him on May 12, 1997. A case under section 302 and 383 of CrPS has been registered.
REVAMP
LUDHIANA: District Youth Congress Rural will be reconstituted and the newly appointed DYC president Manjit Humbran has cancelled all appointments of office bearers made earlier. Stating this here on Sunday, he said the district unit of the party will have new office-bearers, to be appointed in consultation with PYC chief Jasbir Singh Dimpa and the Indian Youth Congress president Manish Tiwari.

JALANDHAR: Punjab Pradesh Samata Party congratulated the party National president and Defence Minister George Fernandes and the scientists and engineers for the succesfully conducting the nuclear tests. Punjab unit president of Samata party, R. K. Mishra, later said that the Defence Minister had agreed to visit Punjab in the third week of June and address the worker of the state unit.

PATIALA: An open rally for recruitment in the army for candidates hailing from Punjab will be held at Polo ground near BRO Complex, Patiala, from May 22 to 31 for Sikh jat and Sikh M and R, Mazbi, Ramdasia and Balmiki soldier GD cat only. Registration of candidates will be done on May 20. n PATIALA: Brahman Kalyan Sanstha, Punjab, has chosen 15 poor Brahman students from the different schools in Patiala and has decided to bear the expenses on their education for the year 1998-99. The Sanstha has been doing this job for the last three years.
PATIALA: Prem Kumar won a special prize for standing in sports psychology, bio-mechanics and was also declared the best overall student in the discipline of basket ball in the NIS graduation ceremony here on Saturday.
JALANDHAR: Punjab Cooperative department has made arrangement for Rs 790 crore loans through the Cooperative Banks in the state for the farmers for the monsoon crops. At present the Cooperative Bank has got security deposits amounting to Rs 2,500 crore. According to Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, State Cooperative Minister, loan worth Rs 50 crore has already been sanctioned under this scheme which has reduced farmers dependence upon the commission agents. The Minister also claimed that all the branches of the Cooperative Banks would soon be computerised and separate counters for non resident Indians would also be started.
AMRITSAR: Vimla Dang, ex-MLA has blamed the authorities for not repairing the scanning machine of the Guru Nanak Dev hospital, which has been out of order for more than a year now. In a letter to Manmohan Kalia, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, she urged him to take personnel interest in the matter.
AMRITSAR: New Model Town, Chheherta, residents have complained of load shedding for the last two days due to the burning of transformer. They have appealed to the Punjab State Electricity Board officials to restore the power supply in wake of heat wave in the city.
