HP govt stable
Una: General Secreary of the Himachal Vikas Congress O P Rattan has said the BJP-HVC government in the state was stable and despite the pro-Congress wave in the recent election, the HVC cadre was strongly behind the Dhumal government. He hailed the working of the chief minster and said the thumping win of BJP candidate Dulo Ram from Baijnath was a clear referendum on developmental activities which had taken place in the state during the BJP-HVC regime. Rattan also said the government should take stern measures to check the rates of bricks in Una district. He said the brick kiln owners were selling bricks at rates much higher than the ones fixed by the government.

Meet
Una: A four-day district football meet was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Dev Raj Sharma at the Indira stadium here today. Rajinder Sharma, senior vice-president of the District Football Association said that 18 teams were participating in the senior, junior and sub-junior categories. The DC announced a cash award of Rs 6,000 to the District Football Association for the development of the game in the district.

Camp
Nahan: The Lioness Club Nahan organised a camp here today and decided to provide uniforms, exercise books, bags, pens and other items to the students of Astha school belonging to poor families. The club also arranged to marry two poor girls in the town and give all household items in the marriage. District president 321A/2 Lalita Rakhian appreciated the working of women’s wing of Lions club in Nahan.

Ration distribution
Nahan: Rakesh Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur said that from July to October 1998, essential commodities worth Rs 5.90 crore were distributed to the general public through 271 fair price shops in the district. He said 1,397 quintals of wheat, 554 quintal of rice and 109 quintals of salt were distributed to Integrated Rural Development Programme families while 1,305 quintals of ration was distributed to the families living below poverty line on subsidized rates.

Mishap
Sundernagar: Twelve sheep and goats were crushed to death by a private truck at Kanaid village about 5 km from here this morning. Shepherd Hukam Chand from Malai was also injured, while the driver sped away.

Donation
Sundernagar: The Sundernagar Beopar Mandal has donated Rs 2,500 towards the Deputy Commissioner’s Relief Fund for the treatment of Khanna rail tragedy victims. According to Narender Goel, president, the draft has been sent to the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana.

Nawanshahr: More than 1,000 school children participated in the Pulse Polio awareness rally organised by the local Rotary Club here yesterday to spread the message of polio eradication by 2000 A.D.
