Chandigarh: The Indian Council for Child Welfare, New Delhi, has invited applications from children up to the age of 16 years, who have shown exemplary courage or have performed some other meritorious deed during the period from April 1998 to March, 1989.The applications should reach the Child Welfare Council, Punjab Karuna Sadan, 3rd floor, Sector 11-B, Chandigarh by July 30, 1999, according to a release issued by Secretary, Child Welfare Council, Punjab, Lt Col retd Uma Ratra. Candidates desirous of applying for this award can get the application forms from the deputy commissioner8217;s office of their respective districts in the state, the release added.
Held for dowry death
Kharar: The Kharar police have registered a case against the husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law of a 35-year-old woman for allegedly forcing her to commit suicide on April 3. Kharar SHO R. S. Sohal said that the case had been registered on the complaint of Piare Lal, father of the deceased. Piare Lal had alleged that his daughter Manju Rani was tortured and harassed by her husband and his family for not having brought enough dowry. While the husband and father-in-law of the deceased have been arrested, the mother-in-law and brother-in-law are at large.
Suicide
Kharar: Rajinder Singh, a 33-year-old resident of Bassian Brahmanan village near Kharar, allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on April 3. According to police sources, the family of the deceased had reported that Rajinder Singh had died due to the intake of a wrong medicine. But reliable sources revealed that he committed suicide because of the illicit relations of his wife with his brother younger.
Mishap
Kharar: Rachhpal Singh, a Constable of the Punjab Armed Police PAP posted at Balongi barrier under the Kharar police station, was seriously injured when a speeding Maruti car DL-2-CB-0377 hit him at the barrier yesterday. Kharar SHO R. S. Sohal said that Rachhpal Singh, who was on deputation with the Excise and Taxation Department, was rushed to PGI in critical condition. A case under Sections 279/ 338 of the IPC has been registered against the car driver who is absconding.
New head appointed
Patiala: Dr K.C. Singal has been appointed head of Punjabi University8217;s Department of Business Management for a period of three years, according to a university press release.
Marriage organised
Patiala: The Public Welfare Society, Patiala, today arranged the marriage of two couples at Amar Ashram. The brides are sisters and the bridegrooms brothers. SSP Parampal Singh Sidhu lauded the efforts of Society president Amar Singh Kamboj and marriage committee chairman Swatantar Passey on the occasion.

Patiala: The district Congress has chalked out an elaborate plan to welcome and make the stay of those participating in the Sarbans Dani Shardha Yatra comfortable. The Yatra will reach Patiala on April 7.
Lab staff flay varsity move
Patiala: The Punjab unit of the University and College Laboratory Staff Federation of India today flayed the decision taken by the Academic Council of Punjabi University under which the lab employees of recognised colleges have been asked to be present during the examination period and to report a week before the termination of summer break. Kuldeep Singh Khalsa, president of the unit, appealed to the university authorities to withdraw the decision immediately.
Absent officers suspended
Kharar: Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Director Vijay Kumar Junjua conducted a surprise raid at the office of Kharar Block Development and Panchayat Officer and Sub-Divisional Officer, Panchayati Raj, here today. Confirming the raid Janjua said he has ordered immediate suspension of three employees found absent at the time of raid. He said the suspended employees include Sushil Kumar and Baljinder Kumar, both junior engineers at SDO, Panchayati Raj Office and Prem Singh, accountant at the BDPO office.
SAD meeting
Anandpur Sahib: All is set for the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal meeting, which is being held at the Dashmesh Academy here tomorrow, even as the state Public Relations Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan today said the jubilant public mood will not be affected by the criticism of tercentenary functions launched by the faction led by former SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra. Reacting to the statement of SAD MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, asking for the boycott of festivities, Sekhwan said: 8220;Notwithstanding the statements from Tohra loyalists, over seven lakh pilgrims have visited the city. Much more are expected8221;.
The Chief Minister has convened a meeting of all Akali Dal MLAs, MPs and SGPC members here to chalk out a strategy for the festivities and will also inaugurate the media centre tomorrow.
