Olympics Bronze medal winner Sushil Kumar said that, region does not have anything to do in wining medals for any sports.

Olympic wrestling bronze medal winner Sushil Kumar says intense practice, a bit of luck and God8217;s grace help athletes win laurels.

8220;Practice coupled with a bit of luck and God8217;s grace help in winning medals irrespective of the region one hails from,8221; he told reporters in Madurai on Wednesday evening at a felicitation organised by a private engineering college.

Replying to a question on why sportspersons from Punjab and Haryana region won more medals, he pointed out that former sprint queen P T Usha, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi had also won medals. 8220;Region does not have anything to do in wining medals for any sports.8221;

Sushil said Delhi and Haryana had a sports policy and sports had been made compulsory in schools and this could be followed in other states. Sushil said he was willing to start an academy to promote wrestling in rural areas.

Describing cricket as a game with mass support and following, he said media played an important role in promoting the game. But other sports like football, volleyball and wrestling did not get such support, he added.

He said he was now focussing on the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and the 2012 London Olympics.
