All these systems performed extremely well during the launch.
Agni is a three stage re-entry missile with advanced technology with a range of 2,500 kms. Out of the four test flights carried out so far, the first three flights were tested from the static launcher erected in Chandipur, Orissa. However, the fourth flight of of Agni-II version was test fired on April 11, 1999 was from an island where the mobile launcher was tried out. This marked a major shift in technology considering the utility of Agni. This mobility was achieved from the rail wagon and all the ground support systems were designed afresh to suit the requirement.
The awards have been instituted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation DRDO for honouring and encouraging outstanding work in various areas of research and development related to defence. The team will receive an award of Rs. 2 lakh at Vigyan Bhavan, Delhi on August 6 from Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.
