CHANDIGARH, AUG 23: While light to moderate showers were experienced in some parts of the city and its vicinity last evening, not a drop of rainfall was experienced in several areas.
Though the monsoon in the city till date has been in excess, this intermittent pattern of rainfall in the city is being experienced with increasing frequency.
There have been several instances this season when some parts of the city, particularly the northern areas, were flooded while the local metereological office technically recorded quot;zeroquot; rainfall on account of areas where recording instruments are situated remaining dry.
Since June 1, the city has received a total of 691.5 mm rain 8212; an excess of 116.3 mm. This, however, is much less than 929.1 mm rain recorded during the same period last year.
Metereological experts say that this pattern occurs when the weather systems are not well defined. quot; When such systems are weak, the clouds break up or spread over several kilometers, which results in rainfall only in those areas above which clouds settle, quot; a local weather official commente. quot;Widespread rains occur only when the system is strong, quot; he added.,Weather systems which bring rain to this region during monsoons develop over the Bay of Bengal and then move inland in the north west direction. The condition of many of these systems, weather experts say, is weak. quot; Also the air-to-air track of these systems varies each time, which affects rainfall in a particular area, quot; a weather office source commented.
Though the moisture is very much present in the air, the clouds developing here are often localised, depending on the climatic parameters at various intervals.
