Terming it as “historic”, Railways Minister Lalu Prasad on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding 27 per cent reservation for OBC students in higher educational institutions, including IITs and IIMs.

“This is a historic verdict and we thank the Supreme Court for it,” Prasad told reporters in New Delhi.

A five-judge bench today cleared the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in admission) Act 2006 providing quota for the OBC students.

“My party welcomes the verdict of the highest court of the nation and all parties should accept it,” he said.

Terming it as a step by the UPA towards social justice, Prasad said the verdict would benefit the OBC students.

About the creamy layer issue, Prasad said, “there will be discussion on it at the government level.” “I have not read the details of the order yet. But the issue of creamy layer excluded from the benefit will be taken up in due process,” he added.
