2 killed, 20 hurt in Karachi blast

KARACHI: At least two people were killed and 20 injured on Saturday when a powerful explosion rocked a residential area of Karachi, police said. The blast occurred in a house in a two-storey building, killing a man and his son instantly, they said. The explosion sparked fire causing damage to several houses in the sprawling Saudabad neighbourhood of the Pakistani port city8217;s eastern Malir distrcit, police and volunteers said. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

Friendship treaty

KIEV: Russian President Boris Yeltsin, who arrived in Ukraine on Friday to end years of arguing by the two Slav states over the Black Sea Fleet, said he was sure a long-delayed friendship treaty would be signed today. 8220;I am sure we will sign an agreement, a declaration. We will sign a string of documents which open huge possibilities for Russians and Ukrainians,8221; Yeltsin said.

10 hurt in skirmish

CALCUTTA: At least ten persons including four policemen were injured during a clash between the supporters of Congress and CPIM at Chataipur in Birbhum district today, according to official sources. The clash ensued over fishing at a pond in the area. Bombs and missiles were freely used during the clash. As the police intervened, they were also attacked by the clashing groups resulting in injury to four policemen.

Pimpalkhute dead

NAGPUR: Harish Pimpalkhute, a local businessman, who shot into prominence for filing a contempt of court petition against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, died in the early hours today following a heart attack. He was 73 and is survived by his wife and a son. Family sources said that Pimpalkhute, who had suffered paralytic attack eight years ago, died in his sleep. The petition filed by Pimpalkhute led to the conviction of Thackeray three months ago.

Defence secretary

NEW DELHI: Ajit Kumar took over as the new defence secretary at the South Block here on Saturday. He succeeds T K Banerji who has superannuated. An IAS officer of 1964 batch, Punjab cadre, Kumar has wide experience at different levels of state and Union government. He has been special secretary home, financial commissioner and principal home secretary in Punjab.

SSC, HSC results

PUNE: The chairman of SSC and HSC board, Maharashtra State, Vasant Patil told The Indian Express that the results would come out on time. While HSC results are expected by first week of June, SSC results will be out by third week of June. However Patil declined to announcn any date for the results.
