Takeover tycoon held for fraud

MUMBAI: Takeover tycoon P Rajarathinam was arrested on Friday in a case of cheque bouncing and remanded to judicial custody. Additional chief metropolitan magistrate N H Pokharkar had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Rajarathinam on January 12 this year. The courtalso turned down his plea for bail. The warrant was issued on a complaint filed by Anita Garware on the alleged bouncing of cheques for a total value of Rs 4.40 crore in the sale of Garware Paints to Rajarathinam in October 1994.

Elected to RS

NEW DELHI: BJP general secretary Venkaiah Naidu, Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra and former Union Minister S R Bommai were among 14 candidates elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Shiromani Akali Dal bagged three seats, BJP, Janata Dal and CPI-M two each and Congress, Kerala Congress, IUML and RSP one each.

In Karnataka where four candidates entered the fray for as many seats, Janata Dal gottwo seats and BJP and Congress one each.

Naga ministry

KOHIMA: The 15-day-old S C Jamir ministry in Nagaland was today expanded with the induction of 15 cabinet ministers and six ministers of state, taking its strength to 33 in the 60 member house.

Governor O P Sharma administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new members of the largest ever ministry in the state.

Afghan air crash

KABUL: Fortyfive people were killed when an Afghan airline Boeing 727 smashed into a mountain in bad weather. Rescuers had brought down 32 body bags and another 15 bags of body parts from the mountain. Searchers found the wreckage of the plane on Sharki Baratavi mountain, 15 kms south of Kabul.

DHAKA: Bangladesh police have formally chargesheeted the detained ULFA leader Anup Chetia for unlawful stay in the country, possession of a false Bangladeshi passport and illegally having a “satellite telephone”, media reports said.
