JAMMU: About 2000 dependents of those killed by militants have been provided jobs by the Jammu and Kashmir government. Minister of State for Home A M Sagar told the state assembly on Wednesday that Rs 25 crore had been granted as ex-gratia relief to the next of kin of the victims of militancy. Deputy commissioners had been asked to assess the damage to property caused due to militancy-related activities in seven to eight years of turmoil.

JAIPUR: China on Thursday called for the formulation of a comprehensive policy in cooperation with India to control the growing world population. Addressing a seminar here on 8220;Indo-China dialogue on population programme,8221; Director General of the State Family Commission of China Jiang Yiman said the measures undertaken by both countries to check the population growth had yielded positive results but more needed to be done.

No one was injured in the fire but some minor damage to property was reported. PATNA: Janata Dal nominee for the Patna Lok Sabha seat Mufti Mohammed Qasim on Thursday announced his retirement from the contest in favour of Rashtriya Janata Dal RJD candidate Ramkripal Yadav. Re-polling for the seat will be held on March 30. Qasim said he had taken the decision 8220;to ensure the defeat of the communal forcesfrom the prestigious seat8221;.

Shot dead

BAREILLY: Samajwadi Party SP leader Abdul Rauf Siddiqui was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Jadhavpur village here on Thursday. Siddiqui, who contested the recent Lok Sabha polls from Nainital on a SP ticket, was shot while on his way to Bareilly from Baheri. The SP leader, his two security men and driver of the vehicle were seriously injured.
