Clinton writes to India, Pak PMs

WASHINGTON: US President Bill Clinton sent letters over the weekend to the Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers, urging restraint and a return to talks, the White House has said. Prime Ministers Atal Behari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif received letters 8220;urging restraint and8230;a resumption of the Lahore dialogue that is the foundation of the engagement between the two sides,8221; spokesman David Leavy said.

State hikes DA

MUMBAI: The State will hike the State Government employees8217; dearness allowance and will also make payments to them from August 1997 to September 1998, according to the recommendations of the 5th Pay Commission, said Chief Minister Narayan Rane here today.

Russian choppers

MOSCOW: Russia has signed an agreement on selling combat helicopters to India, officials said on Wednesday. At least 10 KA-31 helicopters intended for naval operations will be supplied to India under the deal, said Sergei Mikheyev, president of theKamov Aircraft company. Lashkar-e-Toiba ally heldHYDERABAD: AN associate of the ISI-backed Pakistani militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba, Imam Hafeez Quari Wali Mohammed Zahid 36, was arrested at the historic Golconda Fort on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday. According to the police here, the arrest was made on information from the Jammu police that one Imam of Gurgaon, Haryana, having links with the Lashkar and involved in anti-national activities, was now residing in the city.

CB directed to expedite Pillai probe case

NEW DELHI: A City court on Wednesday directed the Delhi Police Crime Branch CB to expedite probe into the custodial death of biscuit tycoon Rajan Pillai here in July 1995. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate CMM R K Gauba issued this direction to the CB after perusing the progress report filed by Inspector S S Rathi, Investigating Officer IO of the case. In his report, Inspector Rathi informed the court that he has examined a number of persons including doctors of Deen DayalUpadhyaya hospital and certain Tihar jail inmates.
