
Four more die in Pak firing: toll now 27
SRINAGAR: Three civilians and an Army jawan were killed and 13 wounded on Saturday in Pakistani firing and shelling along borders in north Kashmir and Kargil, raising the toll since Thursday to 27. At least ten houses were damaged in skirmishes between Indian and Pakistani troops in north Kashmir, which continued for the third day today, an official spokesman said here. He said two persons were killed and 12 injured in artillery fire by Pakistani troops in Uri, Kamalkote, Boniyar and Bijhama sectors of Baramulla District.
Rajasthan scraps octroi duty
JAIPUR: Rajasthan Government on Saturday abolished octroi without imposition of any alternate tax to make up for the resultant loss estimated at around Rs 280-cr. Recovery of octroi at all the municipal checkposts was stopped from Friday night as per the announcement made by Deputy Chief Minister Hari Shankar Bhabhra in July.
Netravati derails
MUMBAI: Passengers aboard the Kochi-boundNetravati Express from Mumbai had a narrow escape early on Saturday after a landslide struck the train, derailing its engine and a sleeper coach. Nobody was injured in the incident which occurred between Rajapur and Vaibhavwadi stations, a Konkan Railway release said here. Following the mishap the Rajdhani Express has been diverted via South-Central Railway and the Madgaon-Mumbai Express has been cancelled today.
