The massive earthquake has affected India greatly and devastated Pakistan. Thousands of people have lost their valuable lives in this natural calamity and renewed our horrible memories of the Gujarat earthquake of January 26, 8217;01. It8217;s tragic that even while we live in an age of advanced technology, we cannot predict such natural calamities so that basic measures could be taken to minimise deaths. This is one of the big ironies of our times.

8226; The 8216;Saturday Morning Shiver8217; IE, October 9 was one of Indo-Pak8217;s worst tragedies. After 7 major earthquakes since 1988, it seems we in this region will have to live with them. Unfortunately no one has been able to predict the place/timing of a quake, so we will have to live with it. The question is is how do we immediately help those spending their nights under the sky?

8226; It is said that if all the people of India and China together simultaneously jump a height of two feet, the earth would possibly shift from its axis! The uncontrolled increase in population, the reckless destruction of hills/trees, the unplanned recovery of the sea and the burying of rivers/streams, the building of massive concrete structures, all these have put great pressure on the ground beneath us. Truly man is destroying man.

Bihar verdict

8226; The BJP, after the SC verdict on Bihar, now has an issue to tom tom. Yet the same leaders, including L.K. Advani, had the audacity to give a clean chit to Modi, in spite of the Supreme Court8217;s strictures. Now leaders like Mahajan have issued 8216;ultimatums8217; to the PM to take action against the governor or resign. A shocking display of double standards!

8226; The apex Court is supposed to be the custodian of Constitution. If it had found the dissolution of the Bihar assembly unconstitutional how can it permit the conduct of fresh elections?

8212; A.H. Maqdoomi Gulbarga

8226; You are right to assert in your editorial 8216;Time8217;s up, Governor8217;, IE, Oct 8 that there is no justification for Buta Singh8217;s continuance. It was believed the state assembly was dissolved to stop horse trading. But since he failed to submit an objective report, it is a fit case for his recall.

US and us

8226; Random comments on the piece, 8216;American pie, sliced up8217; IE, Oct 7. Somebody said, 8220;America is the only country that progressed from barbarism to decadence, without civilisation intervening.8221; It is not grace that keeps our poor quiet, it is resignation to fate.

8226; Or, oddly enough, they can take a lesson in resilience from the dignified poor of India who do not whine when earthquakes or tsunamis hit them8230;8221; How does Jerry Rao know whether they whine or not? Since we have done nothing about our poverty we can only glorify the pitiful existence of the poor.

8212; Amit Kumar Delhi

8226; Jerry Rao thinks that too much is written about the hurricane mishap. I live in Denmark and observed how much attention was paid to the death of a single Danish soldier in Iraq. When about 20 Danes died during the tsunami in Thailand, church services were held, attended by the Queen and government.
