The Indian Railways has suspended three employees and ordered an inquiry into last night’s Purushottam Express collision near Jharkhand’s Gamariah station.
Thirty-two passengers were injured — six of them seriously — when the Puri-bound train collided head-on with a light engine on the same track. One of the compartments was derailed.
Those seriously injured included the driver of the train and his assistant. Seven passengers were released after first aid and 13 were later discharged from the railway hospital.
Senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur division, M N Ojha, said an updated list of the injured had been released by the railway authorities.
Today, the driver, assistant driver of the light engine and the assistant station master of Gamariah were suspended after S-E Railway general manager R R Bhandari met the injured in local hospitals.
The track, which was not damaged, was cleared and opened to traffic this morning, said Ojha. Normal train movement had been resumed.
An inquiry is to be conducted into the incident by a panel headed by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. (With PTI)
