Paigude seeks ban on six-seaters
Shiv Sena MLA Deepak Paigude on Monday demanded that the six-seater autorickshaws should be banned from entering municipal limits.

Paigude who was addressing a press conference here also demanded that distribution of passenger permits to new three-seater autorickshaws should be stopped by the Regional Transport Office.

He told the mediapersons that he had met Chief Minister Manohar Joshi and State Transport Minister Chandrakant Khaire a fortnight ago and discussed the issue with them. 8220;Both of them have responded positively and the CM has also assured me that he will declare the decision of the government over the contentious issue before conclusion of the budget session of the house,8221; he said.

8220;I have conveyed them the feelings of three-seater operators along with various pending issues that need priority, now it is upto them as to what statement to make before the house,8221; said Paigude, when asked as to what were the issues he had highlighted at the meeting.

8220;Nearly one-fifth of the Puneites are dependent on three-seaters for their livelihood. Professional stability has become a social need for the three-seater operators now. If we fail to assure them of this stability, they will be left in lurch like the millworkers in Mumbai,8221; Paigude said.

Blaming the inefficient public transport of Pune, for increase in the number of two-wheeler vehicles in the city, Paigude said, there are 8.72 lakh private vehicles for a population nearing 30 lakhs. 8220;This tremendous rise in number of private vehicles, has caused a slump in business for three seaters,8221; he said.Collision hits traffic
The entire traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Highway National Highway Number 4 was thrown out of gear for nearly three hours due to a head-on collision involving two trucks at Lonavla on Sunday night. An unidentified man was killed on the spot in the mishap, police said.

Two trucks, one heading towards Mumbai and the other coming towards Pune, rammed into each other near the Kiran Petrol Pump at Lonavla, said Deputy Superintendent of Police A S Shaikh from the State Traffic Police.
