Temple to make way for wider road
The decks have been cleared for widening of the Nal stop Karve Road-Mhatre Bridge link road as the trustees of the century-old Mahadev temple, which was eating into carriage width of the road, have agreed to shift the temple to the new site.

The Pune Municipal Corporation PMC has constructed a new temple near the Erandwane fire brigade station and is expected to pull down the century-old temple structure by next week.

Talking to newspersons here on Monday, temple trustee and former mayor of Pune Divakar Khilare said that a pooja was performed last week to install the new idols of lord Shiva, Ganesha and Hanuman at the new temple. The idols at the old temple would be removed by this week and then the temple structure would be handed over to the PMC for demolition.

The flower and other stall holders, who were doing business near the old temple for the past several years, have been allotted alternative sites by the PMC in the same locality. Khilare said that the temple trustees and the devotees have recognised the need for the old structure to be demolished as it was obstructing road widening.

According to the Development Plan DP of Pune, the Nal stop-Mhatre bridge link road, officially named as the late Amrutrao Khilare road, is to be widened to 100 feet. After consulting Khilare and local corporator Shiva Mantri, the PMC officials had sought for the approval of the civic general body for constructing a new temple.

The proposal was approved by the civic general body last year and the new temple was constructed at a cost of Rs 7.5 lakh by the PMC on a 8,000 square feet plot this year.
