10 engineering students go on hunger strike
Ten third year engineering students went on a hunger strike at the University of Pune premises on Wednesday afternoon.

At a meeting with University officials including Dr Sonawane, the Dean Faculty of Engineering and the director of the Board of College and University Development on Tuesday morning, the students were asked to come back only on September 6, when the academic council will announce its decision over granting them the carry over rule. The 50 students are adamant that they want a decision by August 30.

PMC squad to nab litterbugs
In an effort to make the clean city8217; drive more effective, the health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC has formed a special cell to check instances of throwing of garbage on the roads and to instantly penalise persons responsible for such actions.

A special 8220;nuisance detection8221; squad comprising retired officers from the police, active defence services, home guards has been formed. Vinayak Gaikwad, retired deputy controller of civil defence department, has been appointed as officer on special duty to head the cell. The squad will work between 8 am to 8 pm and has been given the rights to penalise erring individuals, together with uniforms and identity cards. The PMC has made an appeal to citizens to throw garbage only in the bins. Citizens having any complaints in this regard can contact the special cell on telephone at 5532521 extension 625 or the health department at the third floor of the PMC building.

Water cut
There will be no water supply at several areas in the city on Friday evening owing to urgent repairs at Parvati water works.

Areas like Paud Road, More Vidyalaya, Anandnagar, Kothrud Gaon, Dahanukar Upper area, NDA Road, Warje, Senapati Bapat Road, Shivaji Housing Society, Shivdarshan, Parvati industrial area, Aranyeshwar and Padmavati among others will not receive water on Friday. The supply will be resumed at low pressure on Saturday, a PMC statement said.
