Additional district judge S R Dongaonkar, member, Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal yesterday delivered the first MACT judgement in chaste Marathi. In 1990, an ST bus and a motorcyclist were involved in a mishap on the Pune-Nashik Road. Pillion rider Shankar Hande 60 had suffered serious injury. He died eight days later at Sancheti Hospital. The court awarded Rs 50,000 compensation to the wife of the mrutak deceased as medical expenses, dukh ani yatna pain and suffering, loss of company to wife and loss of income towards pension. The mansukhbharpai compensation is to be paid by the ST Corporation with 12 per cent interest. In an open court, judge Dongaonkar said the judgement has been delivered in Marathi so that the common man would know its contents and how the court calculated compensation amounts in accident cases. 8220;All arguments, pleadings, written statements and evidence examined in court were in English, yet the judgement was in Marathi,8221; said advocate Rajendra Chavan who appeared for the STCorporation. Preparing the Marathi judgement reportedly took two days of 8220;hardwork.8221;

Returns date
The last date for filing of returns of income, including filing of returns in form no. 2C based on six economic criteria, has been extended to November 2 since October 31 and November 1 being Saturday and Sundays are holidays. However the special counter at each office will remain open on October 31 and November 1 for acceptance of returns. The returns of income in form no. 2C can be filled with the respective assessing officers having territorial jurisdiction over the area, in addition to Pune range-6 at PMT commercial building, Swargate.

Youth set a fire
Twenty-five-year-old Dharma Tukaram Jadhav paid heavily for refusing to provide money to his alcoholic neighbour for purchasing liquor as he was set afire by the irate neighbour.The incident took place at the slums along the railway line near Juna Bazar in Mangalwar Peth area last evening. A large number of slum dwellers watched in horror as Balu Baba Pol 26 poured kerosene over Dharma and set him afire. Dharma, who has been admitted to the Sassoon hospital, has lodged a First Information Report FIR at the Faraskhana police station. Balu has been arrested and charged with attempting to murder. The FIR stated that Dharma and Balu have been neighbours for the last many years. Balu often used to borrow money from Dharma to purchase liquor, it added. A heated argument ensued when Dharma refused to give Balu the money last evening.
