Pull the Plug

Down a shot
Deepika Mehta, holistic trainer

First thing in the morning, have a shot of wheatgrass juice. It8217;s the greatest detoxifier, cleansing the liver and kidneys. If you want to go on an extreme detox, start with one shot a day and build it up over a couple of days to two to three shots.

Blend a handful of wheatgrass in a juicer, strain out the fibre and you8217;ll get enough juice to fill a shot glass. Practising yoga techniques like pranayam and a cleansing, breathing exercise called kapalabhati enhances the detox process.

Walk on water
Deepali Jain, aqua fitness consultant

This one works well for both swimmers and non-swimmers. Walk the width of the shallow side in chest or waist-deep water. Place a sipper of water or nimbu paani on one side of the pool and sip on it when you get to that side. Swimmers can walk the entire length of the pool from the shallow to the deep in suspended mode8212;without feet touching the floor. Doing this exercise for 20 minutes every day works wonders.

The water8217;s force envelopes your body like a corset and acts equally from all sides, like an acupressure massage, and the water helps replenish fluids the body has lost.

Soak up
Lovina G Jha, consultant, Franck Provost Spa

For an extreme detoxifying therapy, try this special bath once a week. Take 10 drops each of eucalyptus and sandalwood essential oils, and mix them in one tablespoon of a carrier oil like almond or sunflower. Add the oil mixture while you8217;re filling the bathtub with warm water 34deg;C to 36deg;C. Also dissolve two cups of Epsom salts in the water.

Soak in this bath for 15 to 20 minutes and follow it up with a cool shower or bath to close pores and improve circulation. A cool drink should be had immediately after this treatment to rehydrate the body. And if possible, get a massage after all this. People with high blood pressure or a heart condition should not try this treatment.

According to ayurveda, tastes are classified into sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent. Food that tastes bitter is known to remove toxins and boost mental alertness. This treatment will also reduce excessive hunger pangs. Foods like lettuce, spinach, methi leaves and seeds, neem, cucumber, celery and karela are cold, light and dry, and they cleanse the body of toxins. You can have lettuce in a salad, spinach can be raw or cooked, methi may be juiced with some tomatoes, while you can simply chew celery stalks.

When your body needs the clean-up, you8217;ll enjoy the bitter foods. Eight to 10 days later, you may not crave them. That8217;s your body8217;s way of telling you the job8217;s done. Then move on to a diet of whole wheat rotis, brown rice and vegetables.

Keep walking
Madhuri Ruia, health management consultant

I recommend a long-term detox plan instead of taking a week off from your life to cleanse yourself by drinking doodhi juice and then going back to the same habits.

If you8217;re active all day, your body8217;s already detoxifying, so walk as much as you can. Get a pedometer, a device that monitors the number of steps you take every day.

It8217;s quite easy to put your diet on a detox regime as well8212;cut out refined foods like sugar, maida and white rice. Increase your intake of green leafy veggies and whole grains and replace tea and coffee with herbal teas. Have some isabgol every day and take Vitamin C and E supplements.

Work the ticker
Nawaz Modi Singhania, fitness trainer

The best workout to help the body detox is a brisk walk or jog. Some form of cardio exercise is needed to get the body to release toxins by sweating. The crisp winter air intensifies the process.

Skin solution
Dr Dinyar Workingboxwala, aesthetician

Detoxifying always works from inside out, so there8217;s not much you can do for your skin if your body8217;s not cleansed of toxins. But basics like proper cleansing and toning always help. Evian Spray Mist is the best toner your money can buy. Also, face packs suited to your skin type should be used.
