
CHANDIGARH, Dec 28: Last year8217;s losing semi-finalists Punjab University, Chandigarh entered the final of the All-India Inter-University Tennis Championship women by beating hosts Banasthali Vidyapith Rajasthan 2-0 in the semi-final played today, according to report received here.
In the first singles, Simmi Rani, a Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association trainee under former Asian junior champion Mayank Capoor, defeated Mala 6-0, 6-1. In the second singles, Tarminder Grower of Punjab University blanked Vandana 6-0, 6-0.
Punjab University will now meet Pune University in the final. They defeated Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar by 2-1. Jasleen Randhawa of GND Varsity beat Kasturi Bhatt of Pune 6-3, 6-2 to give her team 1-0 lead. However, Vanita restored parity for Pune by defeating Roshni 7-5, 6-0. The Pune duo of Kasturi and Jhanvi Sunderam clinched the issue in their favour by beating GND Varsity pair of Jaslin Randhawa and Jagdeep 6-4, 6-3.
The final will be played tomorrow.
Panther Club win
Panther Cricket Club and Bombay Cricket Club won their respective quarterfinal matches of the tenth Bathany Cup cricket tournament here at the CRPF ground today.
Despite Ranjan8217;s strokeful knock of 80, Panther Club still struggled to eke out a narrow three-run win over Tiwari Telecom while Bombay Club defeated Mohali Club by 12 runs in the other match.
Panther Club scored 179 for 6 in 25 overs. Ranjan mixed delightful strokes with a few lusty ones. His dominance could be gauged from the fact that the next highest scorer was Avtar with 16 runs.
Tiwari Telecom set about the target in the right earnest. Though nobody came up with a big score for them, they were well served by their middle-order, with four batsmen coming up with scores in the twenties. However, Satpal 3 for 32 bowled well towards the closing stages to help Panther Club scrape home.
Bombay Club managed 130 for 6 in 20 overs but their bowlers, Arvind Sagar, Tarun Dev and Lalit combined well to restrict their rivals to 1118.
