
CHANDIGARH, July 19: Courses in Punjab University are likely to be restructured so that they are in conformation to the syllabi prescribed by the University Grants Commission UGC. The faculties of science, commerce, arts, and languages are being conveyed the desire of the syndicate to modify their syllabi accordingly.
This follows the meeting of the PU syndicate where some members pointed out that PU students were performing badly in UGC tests as compared to other universities.
Two syndics R D Anand and Rajinder Deepa alleged that the minutes of the university syndicate were being distorted. The VC assured the house that this would not be repeated. The syndicate also approved all the recommendations of the selection committee for appointments at the Muktsar regional centre. The appointment of another superannuated person in the university for the regional centre was criticised by Sneh Mahajan and Rajinder Deepa. The item regarding allowing Dr Rashmi Sudha Puri of the Department of Gandhian Studies to continue to contribute to Provident Fund was also passed.
The syndicate also decided that a separate account would be maintained for such library fees, hostel and security fees by the university and colleges which is not refunded to students.The rates of remuneration of teachers in the university departments has been enhanced from Rs 1,500 per month to Rs 3,000. Following a demand by Charanjit Chawla, the VC agreed that this benefit would also be extended to all colleges.
The issue of Ayurvedic Colleges was also discussed at the syndicate where S S Gill, S S Virdi, and Kuldip Kaur Pannu took part. The university decided to charge the colleges an endowment fund of Rs 20 lakh.
The VC informed the house that due to the postal strike, the number of academic days in the university has been reduced to 181.
