NEW DELHI, November 24: Punjab and Sind Bank PSB overcame defending champions Border Security Force 5-3 via tie-breaker to emerge champions of the 36th Nehru hockey tournament. Both teams were locked 1-1 a the end of regulation period. PSB took early control of the match and forced two penalty corners in quick succession. They scored through the second penalty corner, which came in the fifth minute. Olympian Sanjeev Kumar converted it.

A goal down BSF geared up and in the 17th minute earned their first penalty corner which went waste. Seven minutes later, BSF got their second one and they made no mistake this time and Shinu Hernez8217;s reverse hit pulled them abreast. Both sides tried to brek the deadlock in the later half but none succeeded forcing the match to enter tie-breaker.

First penalty shots by both sides were wasted. BSF Sushil Kumar failed with the second as it was stopped by goalkeeper whereas Bhupinder Hayer converted. Next two shots were put in by both sides and fifth shot, which was to decide the final outcome, was put in PSB8217;s Rajinder Singh to complete the scoreline.

Earlier, Army XI beat IHF Junior 3-2 to finish third. Armymen scored through Anand Velwe, Siprin Anid and Poonacha while Jugraj Singh and Kamlesh Kumar scored for IHF.

Apart from trophy, winners took away Rs one lakh in cash. Runners-up BSF and Army XI who were placed third and IHF who were fourth took Rs 50,000, 20,000 and 10,000 respectively. Christopher Ekka BSF, Kamlesh Kumar IHF, Prabhdeep Singh PSB and Cyprin Aind Army XI were adjuged best players of the tournament and were awarded Rs 5000. BSF was awarded special prize of Rs 10,000 for highest rate of penalty corner conversions.
