VADODARA, June 27: Various sects of the Muslim community took out processions from several parts of the city to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed, the last prophet of Islam, on Sunday.

Large number of men, women and children, dressed in traditional clothes, participated in the processions and congratulated each other on the occasion. Among the prominent processions included ones taken out by the Madarsa-i-Aala Hazrat in Bawamanpura, Azzem-i-Millat in Khatkiwada and Wadi Motivoharwala.

Addressing a gathering of Muslims in Jehangirpura mosque, Maulana Rafiq, however, strongly criticised taking out processions saying that it inconvenienced people and was simply a waste of time and money.

He urged the people to follow the teachings of the Prophet so as to become better citizens and work towards amity and brotherhood. He also regretted that Muslims were lacking in education though the Prophet laid great emphasis on it.

Lectures on the life of the Prophet were also organised in several other mosques including Miyan-ki-Masjid and Madina Masjid in Mughalwada and Nawabwada Masji in Machchipeeth.
