Two days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee branded him a Maoist for interrupting her speech during a public rally to ask questions,a villager from Belpahari in West Midnapore district was remanded on Saturday in judicial custody for 14 days.
Shailaditya Choudhury, incidentally a Trinamool Congress worker, was charged with criminal tresspass, causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty and criminal intimidation. Of the four sections against him,two are non-bailable.
According to fellow villagers,Choudhury was only trying to make sure his grievances were heard by the CM. He wanted Mamata to know he didnt get the Rs 2 a kg rice he was entitled to and wanted job as a home guard. He also meant to complain about the steep fertiliser prices.
As Choudhury repeatedly got up to interrupt the CM during her address in this Maoist belt,Mamata said: I have information Maoists have sent agents to create disturbance. Catch him. Do not let him create trouble.
Choudhury was immediately taken out of the ground by the police but released. On Thursday,he was summoned to the Belpahari police station where his brother Alok works as a home guard. On Saturday,he was put under arrest.
The incident comes two months after Mamata walked out of a CNN-IBN live talk show calling some students who had asked uncomfortable questions Maoists.
Belpahari Inspector Nirmal Majhi said Choudhury had tried to enter the high-security zone, used threatening language and pushed Majhi. A police officer admitted they hadnt found any Maoist links.
Belpahari villagers said the Choudhury family had been a Trinamool supporter since 2009. A former bus conductor,Shailaditya was now without work. He has about a bigha of land.
Said Arabinda Mahato,a local leader: I was sitting where Shiladitya was (at the meeting)… He never tried to break the security cordon or obstruct any policeman.
