Anand regains No.1 ranking

World Champion Viswanathan Anand played out a hard-fought draw with Magnus Carlsen of Norway to finish second in the Bilbao Final Masters chess tournament. Anand,though,dethroned Carlsen from the number one ranking in Live rating list for the first time since January this year and ended up as the top player in ratings too. Vladimir Kramnik of Russia won the Final Masters after settling for an easy draw with Alexei Shirov of Spain. Kramnik scored two wins and four draws in all and ended up at 10 points.

Ingrams ton seals SA win

Colin Ingram8217;s 124 on debut set up a 64-run win for South Africa over Zimbabwe in the first ODI at Bloemfontein. Ingram hit the second highest ever score in an ODI debut to lead South Africa to 351-6. Zimbabwe finished on 287-6,with opener Brendan Taylor making 145 not out. Taylor is just the ninth batsman to bat through an entire one-day innings. Only West Indies great Desmond Haynes8217; 148 against Australia in 1978 is a better score by a batsman in his first ODI.

Ready to fight on: Salman

Pakistan8217;s suspended Test captain Salman Butt says he is confident of having his name cleared in the spot-fixing scandal and looking forward to the appeal hearing being held by the ICC at Doha on October 30 and 31. 8220;I am ready to fight on and I am confident of positive result at the hearing,8221; said. 8220;Everything was going well when this happened and it was very disturbing and disappointing. Murray reaches Shanghai final

Andy Murray reached his fourth final of the year by beating Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-4,6-1 Saturday in the Shanghai Masters. The fourth-ranked Murray has not dropped a set in four matches in the tournament and will next play the winner between No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer. 8220;I chased a lot of balls down,he made a few mistakes,Murray said. 8220;Points like that can sort of change matches a little bit. But I was still feeling quite comfortable,even at that stage.8221;

Krumm set to make history

Japan8217;s Kimiko Date Krumm remains on track to become the oldest player to win a WTA singles title,after beating Shahar Peer in the semi-final of the Japan Women8217;s Open on Saturday. Date Krumm,who turned 40 last month,won 3-6,7-6 5,7-5 win. Date Krumm8217;s opponent in the final will be another veteran -the 33-year-old Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand,who upset second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-2,7-5. The oldest player to win a WTA singles title was Billie Jean King in Birmingham in 1983 when she was 39 years,7 months and 23 days old.

Man U bench Rooney

Manchester United dropped Wayne Rooney to the bench before blowing a two-goal lead and drawing 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion,while Arsenal came from behind to beat Birmingham 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. United didnt appear to be missing Rooney when Javier Hernandez and Nani scored in the first-half. But after the break,Chris Brunts free kick went in off Patrice Evra before Somen Tchoyi tapped in from six yards after Edwin van der Saar dropped a cross from Brunt. Rooney played the last 20 minutes as United drew a third straight match.

Gangjee tied 20th

Rahil Gangjee turned in an erratic level-par 72 to slip three places to tied 20th after the penultimate round of the USD 1.25 million Iskandar Johor Open. The Kolkata-golfer fired five birdies but stumbled to an equal number of bogeys to total five-under 211. Digvijay Singh carded a one-over 73 to lie tied 31st with a total of three-under 213. A shot behind is the duo of Anirban Lahiri and Gaganjeet Bhullar,who turned in two-under 70 and one-over 73 respectively whch is headed at the top by Padraig Harrington with a four-under 68.
