Alastair Cook celebrated his first day as Test captain with an unbeaten 158 not out to put England in a commanding position in the opening Test against Bangladesh. Kevin Pietersen missed his century when he was dismissed for 99 as the tourists posted 374-3 in their first innings at stumps on the first day. Paul Collingwood was unbeaten on 32.

PCB announce T20 squad

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced a 15-member squad for the Twenty20 World Cup but did not name the captain the side.

Northampton sign Sehwag

Virender Sehwag signed a deal with English county Northamptonshire to play in the Twenty20 championship this summer. Sehwag has played for Leicestershire in the English county before. On signing with Northamptonshire,Sehwag said: I am looking forward to the T20 campaign and I am delighted to have joined the county.

Isinbayeva through on last try

Yelena Isinbayeva qualified for the pole vault final at the world indoor championships on her last attempt on Friday. Only months after she was eliminated from the world outdoor championships for failing to clear a height,the Olympic champion from Russia was facing the same situation when she prepared for her third and final attempt at 4.55 meters. This time,she made it to Saturdays final.

Liverpool lose to Lille

Five-time European champions Liverpool are in danger of Europa League elimination after losing 1-0 at Lille in the first leg of its last-16 match. Eden Hazard scored from a freekick to give Lille the advantage against Liverpool,who are struggling to qualify for any European competition next season due to their poor Premier League form. But it was a better night for Juventus,who beat Fulham 3-1.
