Defending champion Saina Nehwal took one more step towards her title defense as she made it to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament on Thursday. Also making progress from the Indian contingent,were H S Prannoy and K Srikanth,who also entered in the last-eight.
Saina is the top seed at the tournament and her domination showed as she thrashed Indonesias Febby Angguni 21-12 21-11 in just over half an hour. In the first game,the world number two opened up a 7-0 lead and didnt look back.
In the second game,Febby took a two point-lead but Saina pocketed seven straight points to make it 11-3 before wrapping up the match.
Saina will now take on eighth seed Juan Gu of Singapore.
In the mens singles event,Prannoy bounced from a game down to prevail over fellow Indian and 10th seed at the tournament,Anand Pawar,19-21 21-13 21-15. The 13th seed K Srikanth defeated Hwang Jong Soo of Korea 21-19 21-15 in another pre-quarterfinal match.
It was not a day when everything fell in place for the Indian contingent,however. B Sai Praneeth lost a close contest to Indonesias Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo 18-21 21-16 19-21 to crash out of the tournament.
